What is Counselling/PSYCHOTHERAPY?
From the moment we are born we start to learn about ways to behave and how to fit in to our family requirements as a baby and later as a child. This learning can cause adaptations of ourselves in order to be accepted by those around us, these adaptations can stay with us through adolescence where they may be re-enforced and finally into our adult lives where they may not be useful in an adult environment. This learning can cause anxiety and stress in our private and public lives if we have learnt for example, that we cannot have our say or that we are not equipped to deal with certain situations. This learnt behaviour can be explored and brought into awareness with the therapeutic process which facilitates a greater choice in our adult behaviour.
How Counselling/Psychotherapy can help
Counselling / Psychotherapy is a way of exploring some of past or present issues in the safe and holding environment of the therapy room. Counselling is open to anyone who is willing to look at their situation. The therapist, without judgment, using their skills can listen actively, and with this knowledge and training help to look at the possible trauma or learnt experiences to allow these beliefs to become present for you. You can then look at the possible emotions and feelings brought up by this re-experiencing and learn new ways of thinking about any situation. The therapist will reflect, challenge and probe in order for you to come to a more mature reflection on your behaviour or modes of operation in work or families, and in this way bring new awareness for you. This learning can allow for a new perspective and hence a less stressful way of being in everyday life. The openness and safety of the therapeutic relationship is one that is very rarely found in everyday life with family or friends and it is this openness and lack of judgement that facilitates growth.
